Living on a historic site

In the 19th century, Auguste Chauvain, a German court painter and teacher at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Liège, bought an 11,000 m² plot of land on the magnificent Mont-Boron hill, on the edge of the commune of Villefranche, to erect a grandiose residence, which he called the Château de la colline de la paix and which became known as the Villa Chauvin.

Later, in 1881, Russian Prince Nicolas d'Oldenbourg acquired the estate, soon to be known as the Château de la Colline de la Paix, before selling it to the famous botanist Robert Rolland Gosselin.

This majestic edifice, some one hundred meters long, consisted of a central body and two side wings with terraced roofs, adorned with yellow and red stucco. Flat tile roofs glazed with geometric motifs and zinc dormers added to its charm.

In 1982, the estate was acquired by a property developer, leading to the destruction of the château, which had been left to deteriorate and fall into disrepair. It was replaced by a complex of buildings that today make up the Les Collines de la Paix residence.

As the new residence occupies more surface area than the château, some of the garden's plant specimens were preserved and transplanted to the Les Cèdres estate in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
