In 1939, he chose the villa "Jeannette," made available to him by an English couple, the Pooles, despite its proximity to the Kommandantur. This did not prevent him from sheltering Jews during the war. In Grasse, he wrote "The Life of Arseniev" and learned of his Nobel Prize while at the cinema.

Bunin preferred tranquility and mingled little with the people of Grasse, contenting himself with rare outings. However, he was sometimes seen in Antibes on the "Bel-Ami," Maupassant's last boat. At home, he received numerous writers and artists, such as Rachmaninoff, Chaliapin, Nina Berberova, and André Gide, with whom he shared a passion for chess.

The famous Russian sculptor Andrei Kovalshuk, winner of the French Renaissance Prize in Russia, offered the City of Grasse a statue of Ivan Bunin. Inaugurated on Saturday, June 3, 2017, in the garden of Villa Saint-Hilaire, this two-meter statue is a lasting tribute to this illustrious writer. The inauguration ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mr. Alexandre Orlov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to France, and Mr. Andrei Kovalshuk, President of the Union of Painters of the Russian Federation.
