It was built in the early 20th century and named after the legendary queen of Babylon, Semiramis.
The villa is a favorite with wealthy visitors and celebrities looking for a luxurious getaway on the Côte d'Azur. Its location in Villefranche-sur-Mer makes it an ideal base from which to explore the region, including nearby Nice and Monaco.
Villa Seminaris: an example of Belle Epoque architecture in Villefranche sur Mer
Villa Semiramis stands out for its elegant architecture and style that reflects the aesthetics of the Belle Époque. It was designed in a neo-classical style, typical of the luxurious homes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The villa's exterior features harmonious lines, with a symmetrical façade and refined decorative elements. Columns, balustrades and pediments are common features of neo-classical architecture, and Villa Semiramis is no exception. Wrought-iron balconies and large windows let you enjoy views of the surrounding sea.
The choice of materials also contributes to the villa's architectural appeal. Local stone is often used, giving the whole a solid, timeless appearance. Marble details, moldings and delicate ornamentation add a touch of sophistication to the overall structure.
The villa's interior is equally impressive. Rooms are spacious, bright and richly decorated. High ceilings, marble fireplaces, precious wood floors and crystal chandeliers create a luxurious, elegant atmosphere.
The architecture of Villa Semiramis is a testament to the style and refinement of the era in which it was built. It embodies the timeless charm of the Côte d'Azur and continues to attract the attention of visitors who appreciate the historic architecture and idyllic setting of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
It is surrounded by a superb Mediterranean garden planted with palms, cypresses and other exotic plants. It also boasts a private swimming pool and extensive terraces that allow guests to take full advantage of the region's sunny climate.
Villa Seminaris in the History of the Côte d'Azur
Villa Semiramis has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century and is shrouded in mystery: indeed a vagueness reigns around its construction date and who commissioned it.
The mystery of its construction
It is said to have been built between 1902 and 1904 by an unknown architect, however, other sources place its construction in 1913. It is also assumed that Emmanuel Pontremoli, architect of the Villa Kerylos, was the thinker, but no official document confirms this. It's also unclear who commissioned the work: there are three potential sponsors.
The first is a British businessman by the name of Sir Arthur Paget, a passionate art lover and collector who wanted a luxurious residence to allow him to fully enjoy the beauty of the Côte d'Azur.
The second is Elie Leroux, a restaurateur in Villefranche-sur-Mer about whom little further information is available.
The third, and by no means least, is King Leopold of Belgium, who also commissioned several properties on the French Riviera, including the Villa Les Cèdres in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
An opulent Villa through history
The villa was named Semiramis after the legendary queen of Babylon, renowned for her beauty and opulence. The name evoked the idea of a sumptuous, grandiose residence.
Over the decades, Villa Semiramis has retained its appeal and renown. Today, it is one of the symbols of fine architecture on the Côte d'Azur, and continues to be appreciated by visitors and wealthy residents alike.
This private property, whose history has been marked by time, remains a prestigious residence that embodies the elegance and timeless charm of Villefranche-sur-Mer and the surrounding region.
