A rich history at the service of an exceptional architecture for this castle in Mougins
Facing the Iles de Lérins, the château is actually a former monastery built by the island's monks. Although it was transformed over the years into an aristocratic residence, it has retained its name and homage. It became an emblematic residence of the French Riviera, thanks to the vision of Sir Edwin Lutyens, who completely transformed it in 1912.
Sir Edwin Lutyens: renowned architect in the service of the greatest in Mougins
Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was a renowned British architect, widely recognized for his diverse and influential work in the field of architecture. He is often associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as with the Georgian Revival architectural style. His architectural style was characterized by a combination of tradition and innovation, integrating classical and modern elements to create buildings that were both elegant and functional.
Lutyens had a unique ability to adapt his style to his clients' preferences and the characteristics of the site, which led to a variety of designs. Known for two types of building, he successfully completed military memorials and castles in France, England and India.
Lutyens was involved in the design of the new capital of British India, New Delhi. He was behind the construction of Viceroy Castle (now known as Rashtrapati Bhavan), a central feature of the capital and today the official residence of the President of India.
Among the castles he built was Castle Drogo, in Devon, England, an emblematic work of the Arts and Crafts movement, with its meticulous architectural detailing and meticulous interior design.
Château Lérins is actually one of his first large-scale achievements and is a grandiose testament to his art in France.
A worldly estate in Mougins
After the First World War, the château was bought by the British banker and statesman Baron de Wolverton, who made it his family's vacation residence for several decades.
Just before the Second World War, after the death of Baron Wolverton and his heir, his widow sometimes rented out the property as a summer residence to wealthy holidaymakers. In the summer of 1939, the Kennedy family rented the property while Joseph Kennedy was US Ambassador to the United Kingdom and John F. Kennedy (his son) travelled around Europe getting to know the continent.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the château played host to some of the biggest names in art and cinema, who stayed in Mougins in conjunction with the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. These included Catherine Deneuve, Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon Stone and Sean Connery.
