Historic elegance at the Palais Maeterlinck on Cap de Nice
Located on France's sumptuous Côte d'Azur, the Palais Maeterlinck on the Cap de Nice is an architectural marvel that bears witness to the elegance and refinement of its era. Nestled in peaceful, enchanting surroundings in the hollow of the waves, this historic gem embodies the very essence of Belle Époque opulence and charm.
The history of the Palais Maeterlinck
Discover how the property became famous for its fascinating parties and a center of the Riviera's artistic life, attracting personalities from all over the world before being transformed into the prestigious residence we know today.
The Palais Maeterlinck: the beginning of the Grande Époque
Originally conceived as a private residence for American businessman Frank Jay Gould, the building was acquired in 1920 by the Count de Miléant, a Russian aristocrat. His ambition was to create a rival to the Monte Carlo casino, and he named the building Castellamare. However, this project was abandoned when the Palais de la Méditerranée opened in 1928, in direct competition with the casino.
The Comte de Miléant invested a considerable fortune in this venture, but in 1930, following a decision by the Nice court, the building was put up for auction. It was bought by Maurice Maeterlinck, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and husband of actress Renée Dahon, for two million Belgian francs. The property then became Villa Orlamonde, in reference to a poem from the opera "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue" by Paul Dukas and Maurice Maeterlinck. Maurice Maeterlinck continued with the project, completing the building of which only the basic structure had been completed at the time of his acquisition.
The villa, covering an area of 6,000 m², is surrounded by a four-hectare garden. Its design stands out thanks to a terrace offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Notable features include two basins inspired by Louis XV aesthetics, solid onyx bathtubs, coffered ceilings, artistic frescoes and a vast 200 m² hall. This residence becomes a worldly meeting point where Maurice Maeterlinck organizes sumptuous festivities, attended by celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
The Palais Maeterlinck today
As a tribute to Maurice Maeterlinck, the municipality of Nice names part of the boulevard Carnot overlooking the villa "boulevard Maurice-Maeterlinck". Following the death of the owners, the heir joined forces with a property developer to transform the site into a condominium of around twenty apartments.
From 1987 onwards, a Swiss businessman, Henri-Ferdinand Lavanchy, gradually acquired the apartments and had the "Mélisande" pavilion built on an adjoining plot. This transformation transformed the property into a luxurious four-star palace, which opened its doors in 1990 under the name "Palais Maeterlinck".
In 2008, the hotel ceased operations, and in 2012 the property was purchased as a luxury residence with 18 sumptuous apartments, marketed exclusively by the real estate agency group Côte d'Azur Sotheby's International Realty.
